Our spatial aspect

Our spatial aspect makes us appear as objects with mass and our time aspect as processes involving equivalent energy. Our matter and activity cannot be separated: they are facets of the same reality. This is equally true of old-old people.

the further we advance

The further we advance into persons the more activity (conversation) among them we discover. The closer we look the more restless and dynamic the picture. People cannot be separated from their correlations. The more we confine them (such as in shrinking brains in dementia, or shrinking worlds as in nursing homes) the more restless they become.

Footprints in the Windsm # 1585–Metaphor for world reality:

Footprints in the Windsm # 1585

Conversation, as metaphor for the world-reality, stretches us:
From what we know to what others, too, can see;
From objects to relations as primary;
From measuring to mapping;
From quantities to qualities;
From structures to processes;
From reality out there to assimilating that the way we ask changes what answers reality gives us;
From seeking certainties to moving toward better approximations;
In short: from smaller to larger, more inclusive.

must happen in the family

The main conversation has to happen in the family. If the doctor has had a conversation with the patient, and then the family are the only ones conscious, things can get turned around. So doctors should be encouraging the conversation to go more deeply in the family.

People can take truth

People can take truth if it’s not sugar coated. The even become hopeful. We do not know the essence of their hope. Maybe it is not to become free of disease. Maybe it is to hug their children one last time. Maybe it is to have a good death, whatever they might choose that to mean.

Assimilation is the job

Assimilation is the job of living conversation. To converse is to assimilate, to take in and absorb the other, being of being.

(Old) people are not so much individuals as complex tissues of relationships reaching outward to other relationships, overlapping, combining, weaving.

Who’s there, who’s not?

When you’re dying: Who’s there, who’s not? Where are you, where are you not? What are you doing and not doing? What smells are around and not? Who is helping whom? Who died the way you want to die?

The obvious inability we have to

The obvious inability we have to explain conversation does not mean we cannot work with ourselves in relation to it. Someday.

Years not of decline but of growth

These are years not of decline but of growth. Growth can be in reflection, spirit, work on memories, with hands, observation, and a panorama of things.
