Two gifts

You pay me
I sell to you
the products of my labors
beneath the surface
lagniappe
I make a gift
of my spirit
there is only one spirit
for humans to give and receive
beyond bargains
and you from
your spirit
make another gift
two gifts
first you add your readings
to my poetry
second you carry off
the product that has
held me, held my space
freeing me
to more, to higher
meeting giving
meeting giving
a respiration
for humanity

Notice you

Yes I do
Notice you
Crossing the street
Against the light
Holding up traffic
Because you need to be seen
Humanly

The honey bee is not lost

The trees in the forest
are not lost
The honey bee in the field of wildflowers
is not lost
The snowflakes in the hurricane
are not lost
But you, human, have the
ability to find yourself lost
and that can make all

You my parents and grandparents

A thread of life there runs
from you my parents and grandparents
back through eons of eons
through me to you my children and grandchildren
on forward eons of eons
it counts for us as immortality
’tis up to me this thread to spin to spin

Breadcrumbs well lost

Breadcrumbs
These inklings are
Dropped along the way
Not so I can find my way back out
But so I can find my way back in

These are evidence
I am well found and lost

When I’m 95

In every way that matters
When I’m 95
When you’re 95
We will see
In every way that matters
We are just like each other
Let’s start now

Take life as an example:
You move—you have life
You want it to go on—life has you

What you lose, you will find

What you lose, you will find
Who leaves you, will return
You victim, will be victim no more
Open, tell your story, forgive
You will be found, be embraced, free yourself

Bird chases bird

Bird chases bird
Are they grieving or embracing?
Four-year old chases
Seven-year old around the house
Are they challenging, fighting
Or are they playing, loving?
You and the person opposite
Resisting you-do you
Fear death of your ideas—or you
Or do you stay in the room because
This person you somehow need?

You contain worlds of worlds

We belong to one another We belong to the universe Each belongs to each All belong to all We are members one of another We contain the all as much as the all contains us Each person you meet contains you whole as you contain all whom you have met Walt contained worlds and you contain worlds of worlds you will never fathom and yet they have fathomed you and you they somewhere in your now Sing your songs for you are singing our songs of grieving and embrace All life’s roots are in grieving and embrace Poetry still tells our story in silence and exploding words
