We do not hear
The profoundest words
we do not hear
come in our own voices
or in that of our neighbor
whom we don’t much like
or in those of the persons
around us everyday
:- Doug.

What I have to say
is not as important as
what I have to hear
is not as important as
hearing each other

The fastest route
To seeing afresh:
Ask someone different

The beauty of music
Uses the whole scale
Low notes and high
Many rhythms much silence
Invite all the music
All the weather
Into you

Not magic

To not retire, to invite persons to throw themselves in, opens the world to life, and brings me joy.
:- Doug.
I was surprised to see, at an information fair, that churches and civic groups and issue organizations resented each other, felt in competition with the others and with me because I was inviting to an event. Looking deeper: they feared there would not be enough workers or donations or attenders for all. They forgot that each project draws a new and vital constituency, that in this universe there are no limits outside our own tightened fists.

Sometimes after I’ve shown off my knowledge, I find I’ve shown off my ignorance!
Any time we open our mouth, we are showing…something.

We flit, we float, we die
Butterflies in a windstorm
Never knowing our children
Nor whence we came
:- Doug.
Conversation is hard
I can never get all I want
I am thwarted, opposed
On every side
My ideas turn to mush
My arguments fall apart
And possibly my mind
Caterpillar-like I travel
On too many legs
Do we all ever go
The same direction?
In here with all of you
Less is clear, nothing is clear
A medley, a mixture—a soup!
Is this how it feels,
Dying or
Inside a chrysalis?
We are making the
Frightening, unexpected
Colors, antennae, many-eyed
Membranes to catch the subtle airs!
:- Doug.
What did he see?
The poet writing that
Juxtaposition
Was pointing—
What start did I see?
