We all have glimpses and even inklings—to get their value, we need to honor them. Attend them, ponder and work them and let them work us, and they might just grow to be insight.

Opening space is akin to seeing divinity arising. It is when listening turns to hearing. When listening becomes hearing, when we hear deeper, we have the opportunity to see what’s special among us, to act upon it. Acting after all is the easiest quickest part of making something happen. Choosing the right thing, the deeply right thing, and the right time, the kairos time, is what makes our investment. Opening space is therefore opening time, allowing freedom for our minds and stories to touch our being.

When you make your Will, are you making a dump cake, or a better future (for your kids, for others)? How wide do you stir?
Are you merely unloading the dump truck, or are you consciously arranging your gifts to have the most good effect?

In the stream of humanity
roiling, rapids, swiftly flowing
Our paddles are our ears
:- Doug.
This is the sacred realm
The holy of holies
This human being facing, us
:- Doug.
There are miracles among us
When pain expressed is heard
When a hand takes a hand
When the poor converse up a way
When we hear or do or see
:- Doug.
Had we but ears for the task
Even the revving of the engine
Would speak to our core
:- Doug.
With emptiness in our souls
We think we throw a party
Yet to truly converse bowls and platters
We must fill with tears and laughter
From among
:- Doug.
In embryo
Among us
The better world we so crave
Yet to see it walking, playing
From its coeur, feet and fingers
Tender we must grow conversing
In embryo

If I see my role as healer—
it means I listen more
I hope it means I hear more
for more is in these hearts
ready to come to voice
from coeur can come spreading
roots, engaging roots,
living roots, desiring more life:
family become whole
—If I encourage these to hear, maybe this
family becomes whole
:- Doug.
What is my work as a lawyer? I am getting the inkling it is about whole-making, about bringing the family of humankind to a larger wholeness, completeness, fullness. It is not about solving problems but about living life.
:- Doug.
Of course people come to us lawyers with problems, but they do not want to be here. I want to turn the coin over and look at what can we do to make wholeness. Let’s reel in toward wholeness, let’s not fix what’s broken. We are people, we are not broken, we are growing all the time.

If we make our families one, our communities follow.
