To work change, the social space (between the one inviting change and the one to be changed) must be narrowed close to the point of being eliminated. Third parties can be intermediaries, serving to 1. introduce the two or 2. to bridge. The two could be in one person. Closing the space serves to humanize and personalize each other. The essential work of making change is closing the soul space between persons.
Group size plays on this. The larger the group, the more difficult it is to make this intimacy. It is not impossible. It will probably take more time. By breaking the group into subgroups, the intimacy is aided by closer physical proximity and shorter social proximity. Time is geometrically shortened because there are fewer intervening parties and topics, and we concentrate our attention.
